Jackson Township, Wood County or Deshler, Henry County

For my first post, I will explore a very big misperception that many genealogists on our Jameson family have made. This misperception is the exact location of Thomas Jameson and Mary (Sears) Jameson homestead/farm. The reason this location is important is because many of Thomas and Mary's children and grandchildren were born and died on the farm itself. If you do a search on many of the major genealogy site's (i.e. rootsweb.com, familysearch.org, and anciestry.com), you will find many of them listed with the location of Deshler, Henry County, Ohio. Yes, sometimes this is correct, but not always. Looking at Thomas Jameson's own obituary, it lists him as passing away at his home in Wood County.

A number of years ago, Prudence (Jameson) Dangler's daughter, Joy Rayle of Deshler, OH passed on a packet of information, she had received from her mother. Included was a small biography of Thomas Jameson, amongst many other things. Within Thomas’ biography, it lists that Thomas gave the property to the community of Deshler to create the Oakdale Methodist-Episcopal (today United Methodist) Church on the southwest corner of his farm. Today’s postal address of the church is:

Oakdale United Methodist Church

24994 Hancock Wood County Line Rd

Deshler, OH 43516

The church is located on the corner of
Hancock Wood County Line Rd
to the south, and
Henry Wood County Line Rd
to the west. If you do a ‘google map’ search of this spot, the church falls just inside the Jackson Township, Wood County line. Crossing the road, west, is Bartlow Township, Henry County. Just northwest of the church, about 1 ½ miles is the community of Deshler, Henry County.

In other words, in recording these people’s birth/death/etc. locations, be careful and try to find out the exact spot the happening took place at in regards to the Jameson’s and Deshler. If it says on Thomas Jameson’s farm, it is not Deshler, but Jackson Township. Even some of the older documents are incorrect on this point.
